#POLITICS: Buhari Won't Disappoint Niger Deltans _Dokubo

Special adviser to the president on Niger Delta, Prof Charles Dokubo, has said President Muhammadu Buhari would not leave the Niger Delta behind in his determination to transform the country.

Speaking at a foundation laying ceremony for a vocational training centre of the Amnesty Programme at Gelegele, Edo State, he urged the people of Niger Delta to be united in pursuit of a common vision and support President Buhari for rapid development of the region through the instrumentality of the Amnesty Programme and other interventionist agencies.
Dokubo, who stated this through his special assistant on Media, Murphy Ganagana, also stressed that the terminal date for the Presidential Amnesty Programme was not a card on President Muhammadu Buhari’s table.

According to him, “Our people should know that they are all part of the Amnesty Programme, which was set up by the late President Yar’Adua, who brought the demands and aspirations of the Niger Delta people to the bear. He knew that for a long time, we had not gained from whatever was produced in the country.
The ground-breaking ceremony for the Amnesty Programme Vocational Training Centre (VTU), Gelegele, preceded the commissioning of a vocation training centre at Kaiama, Bayelsa State, which was completed, fully equipped by Prof Dokubo within a short period in office.

It was the hallmark of week-long activities embarked upon by Prof Dokubo, including the commissioning of the Amnesty Programme liaison office in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and the distribution of starter packs for empowerment of residents of communities impacted during the Niger Delta crises.

ASUU: Strike Suspended.

Factzone
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended the three month old strike after signing all agreements with the Federal Government.
The agreement was reached through at the end of the conciliatory meeting held at the instance of the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige and his Education counterpart, Malam Adamu Adamu.
The parties brokered the truce few hours after a team of Students from National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) threatened showdown against the leadership of ASUU who attended the negotiation.
Ngige, who read the agreement signed by both parties, expressed optimism that the strike would be suspended.
He said, “This is going to be a conclusive meeting and conciliatory meeting between Federal Government and ASUU.
“This dispute culminated into a strike that started on the 5th of November, 2018.”
According to him, the parties unanimously resolved the eight contentious issues that had prolonged the strike.
He noted that the issue of the NUMPENCO has been resolved as ASUU collected the licence on the 28th January, 2019.
Besides, the Minister said that the Visitation panel has also been instituted and will commence work on 2nd March with the view to sanitizing the tertiary institutions, adding that it was in tandem with anti-corruption campaign.
On Earned Allowances, he said that the Federal Government has released the sum of N20 billion to all categories of staff but with ASUU having a bigger chunk of the money.
He however noted that Government has approved additional N5 billion for payment of Earned Academic Allowances and others.
He further stated that the sum of N25 billion will be released as Revitalisation Fund between April and May 2019 and resume full implementation of the MoU signed since 2009.
On the reconstitution of the Federal Government’s negotiation team, he noted that none of the parties can dictate whom to represent the interest of either parties based on the International Labour Organization Convention.
Meanwhile, it was agreed that Government’s team should reconvene not later than Monday, 9th and conclude its work on or before 29th March, 2019.
To this end, he observed that ASUU has resolved to brief respective organs with the view to suspend the strike.
On his part, Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU President, said that the brief presented by the Minister was what was agreed.
“finally, we have come up with a document which we have signed on behalf of our members. Our members are waiting and you will hear from us later today,” he said.

Nigeria Politics

Let me remind you that Daura, which was
founded by Tuaregs some
centuries ago, is regarded as the spiritual home of
the Hausa people.
The Emirate extends from our own Katsina State
to Zinder in Niger Republic. Therefore, for Buhari,
the
trip to Niger Republic was like a ride from one end
of one’s hometown to
another. And since Niger, Chad and Cameroun are
also neck-deep in the
war against the Boko Haram terrorists, I am not
one of those criticising Buhari for visiting them to
exact stronger commitments towards
his agenda for ending the bloody nonsense.
I only note, however, that the chicken has come
home to roost. Buhari’s
wife, Aisha, can now apologise to ex-
President Jonathan whom she asked to resign
last year when he visited
these countries before he
commenced the six-week campaign to end the
nonsense.
Buhari himself should equally apologise to
Jonathan because even he has now seen the
need to accept the US offer to “assist” to
terminate the nonsense. He had, only a month
ago, said it was a “shameful” when stories made
the
round that some South African experts or, if you
like, “mercenaries”,
were involved in the campaign. Talk can be very
cheap, but that is politics
for you.
